"You've slipped into my life as easily as vermouth into a glass of gin... quickly and just a bit too smooth."

Well, after a wonderful rehearsal process, a long week of tech, and four fantastic performances, the show is finished. The stage is clear, the props are stored away, and Zach has removed his fake nails.

It's been such an amazing experience. I've had more fun in the past few weeks than ever before. Every single person involved is so talented and brought so much to the production. We couldn't have done it without each and every one of you.

Thanks for reading our fun little blog, and coming out to see our beloved show. We hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.

I will miss going to the theatre every night and seeing eager faces ready to work. I'll miss calling cues, tracking blocking, and guzzling Red Bull like there was no tomorrow. I'll miss rehearsal reports (kinda), healthy snacks, and lingering in the theatre long after rehearsal ended. I'll miss cast outings, silly blog posts, and so much more. But most of all, I will miss seeing the people I love every day.

So, sappiness aside, thanks for all the new friendships, memories (including those still to be created), and laughs. I love you all, far beyond anything I could ever articulate here. It's never over. This is just the beginning...

Always,
KC

Hi there! Emily the ASM here :) The other night we had a "girls night" at our stage manager KC's house. We ate lots of food, gossiped, watched grease 2 and shaved the leading ladies(AKA. Zach Hines') Legs. YES! All the hairs on his legs from a little above the knee down are gone!! Here are some amazing photos that document the beginning, middle and end of the crazy experience...

Beginning Middle

End! BEAUTIFUL!! tehe

The greatest experience!

Hi y'all!!!

Your Assistant Director speaking :) Honestly, i havent been blogging nearly as close as i've been thinking about and living everything that's been going on in the D!M!D! experience... However, i'd like to excuse myself by letting you know that i'm totally old fashioned, all about letters and a little computer illiterate so i just figured this thing out, haha.

Anyway... i also tend to write WAY too much, so i'm gonna try to keep it as short as possible!
Can i just say how freakin' amazing this experience has been?! I've been having the greatest time, learning so much, and living things that'd i'd never dreamed of. We have the most phenomenal sense of ensemble and every night it's a pleasure to go to rehearsal and see everyone grow - as performers, as professionals, as friends, as human beings... There isn't a better feeling in the world like seeing this happening in front of your very eyes!

Again, trying to keep it as short as possible, i'd like to say a little something to each individual person involved in this:

Joel and Jerid (aka best props guys ever!) - you guys' detail and perfection has made our props the coolest! And as if that wasn't enough... you are so much fun to work with! There isn't a day that you are around that i don't crack up laughing histerically. Thank you for all your help :)

Alex Amyot (our dear technical director) - sometimes i feel like people have no idea how hard you work to make our life easier... after a lot of thought and specially sweat and saw dust in that shop, the set looks awesome! Oh, and you're also the coolest boss! Thank you for everything :)

Sam (our "everything" guy) - you're always around for the best and the worst, if there's an issue you figure it out, always with that sneeky smile on your face, and for that we thank you :) Best "bitch" around... (for those who don't know Sam... that's a term of endearment!)

Lindsay (our Bootsie) - your character choices crack the hell out of me and the funny thing is... you do that in real life too! You bring so much life with you every night and pump up the energy anywhere you go! You're so interesting to watch on stage and... Thank you for being the best maid ever :)

Timothy (our Sol) - I know you can't take a complement but... you're great! Just accept it! If anyone does their "homework" well, its this guy! Whenever i'm not with you at rehearsal, i see you around in the lobby, studying your lines or going over directing notes and.. you know what.. i'ts working, better than you know! Thank you for your hard work and great character development :)

Margo (our Edie) - You're a brain! I can't even begin to tell you how much your intelligence added to the character! And, on top of that, you're fun, daring and have such a good heart. Thank you for everything you bring to the table every night my darling, it makes a difference :)

Griff (our Lance) - I can't even begin to tell you how exciting it is to work with you... You're not only portraying Lance as it should be portrayed, but you're always willing to question, learn and commit, and the great thing is, you get happy about it! Thank you for being so easy to work with while having fun at the same time :)

Nick (our Tony Parker) - What can i say? A few months ago it would've never crossed my mind that i'd be working with you so closely... But i am, and let me say that your commitment to this role, your positive energy and attitude and our one on one (or two on one - with Zack) sections make me smile! It's incredible watching you improve everyday and, most of all, watching the effort you put into it. It's been worth it man, you don't even know, and i cant wait to see the final product! Thank you for the times and commitment :)

Zack (our Angie) - Oh my God! I could write all day in this thing about you... Sometimes i feel like you have no idea how great you are. If anyone should have an ego it would be this guy, but you don't and that's what makes you special among talent. You're the quickest to follow direction, your commitment and hard work are unbelievable and i will just have to stop now because this could go on forever! Thank you, for everything that you give us all :) Damn, almost forgot.. you're prettier!!!

Miles (our Tony understudy and, according to him - best AD) - You know i love you! And i do for a reason.. you do your work, with a smile on your face and a hug in your arms, and you do it well! What more can a person ask to work with?! Having you around is freakin' fantastic and i couldn't be more thrilled to have you on the team! Thank you for being the coolest ever :)

Emily (our ASM) - Oh my God, how i love this girl... Your giggles, your good heart and fun personality make the day of a lot of people. And on top of that, you commit yourself to whatever is asked of you. Working with you has been a pleasure, and the fact that you do your work while being the sweetest and giggliest thing alive makes it even better! Thank you for the moments you give us :)

KC (best SM in the whole wide world) - Man, if i could describe this girl in one word it would be "perfection"! You placed us in the professional world, you steped up UT to another level, your level of commitment and professionalism is of another world, and the greatest thing is.. you do it while being so much fun to work with! I could never believe there could be such a combination, until i met you! Thank you for... everything :)

Our tech people - you sweat and work hard to build our set, and you do it in a happy fun way, and we couldn't be more grateful for all that you've been doing :)

And, last but not least - AMI (our awesome director) - I cannot thank you enough for this opportunity! Ami, you're the coolest, awesomest, most unique director i've ever met, and the greatest thing is that you surprise me every day and teach me stuff that i had never thought of. Working with you has been the most incredible experience i've had in my life and i still cant believe it. You created this incredible environment, this crazy awesome sense of ensemble, this masterpiece of creativeness. Thank you thank you thank you :)

Well, i think this is enough but... To everyone else... come see this show... you wont regret it because.. the connection we have among each other, transforms into talent and ultimately transforms into connection with you, our audience :)

Peace and.. Can we please take this on a tour??? ;)

The World in a Night (a view from a sink)

Today has been a day to say the least. It all started this morning when I awoke from a deep slumber. Now you you must be thinking "You just woke up on the wrong side of the bed, it's no big deal" normally I would agree but I wasn't even in my bed. I woke up on the wrong side of a strangers bed, the worst kind. He said, "I'm glad your awake, now you can leave." I was mortified, so I collected my things and bolted for the door, and to make matters worse I tripped while running to the door so it was a less than graceful exit; I can just hear my mother yelling "Born to dance," in her shill condescending tone. I thought to myself it is still early and I still have time to turn this day around. So I got some coffee from Starbucks and went back to my apartment to collect myself and clean out. I got home and it was at this point that I realized that I had left my underwear at his place; they were my favorite pair so I actually wanted them back. I begrudgingly called him after I spent an hour finding his number under "guy with lisp"; he said that I was being really needy and I should stop pestering him so I said, "I just called so I can get my stuff back." Like an asshole he replied, "Please they all want a repeat performance, but that's just not my thing," and he hung up. I decided that all was almost lost and I should take a nap before anything else could go wrong. When I woke up I felt better and then my friend Christina called and said," How was your night last night, you were pretty wild, so how was he?" I broke into tears and told her the whole story. She felt terrible and told me that we were going to go out tonight with everyone to end the week on a better note. We went out for a nice meal at NOLA cafe where I had a nice bowl of gumbo. After dinner we walked next door to Moon Under Water and started drinking. All was going well until a few hours went by along with about eleven drinks when my friend Tom said, "So, Barbara I heard you had a crazy night last night," Christina shouted, "Shut up! we are not going to talk about it." The problem was the damage was done all I could think about was "guy with lisp" and his look of disgust when he saw me in the morning; a girl never forgets that. I ran to the bathroom in tears, but there was someone in the stall so I sat in the sink. I had not realized at this point that I was in the men's bathroom. So I thought to myself, "Jesus Barbara, what else could you do wrong. The bartender came into bathroom to see if I was alright. It didn't help that the other patrons of the bar gave me really odd looks when entering the bathroom. One kind person came up to ask if I was alright, but I couldn't even answer, but I did talk to Christina. He said,"She is really going through a moment, is she going to be alright?" Christina (that bitch) said "Her whole life is a moment," so the truth finally came out, that's what she thought of me. I busted through the door after getting helped out of the sink (of course I got stuck) and said "I am leaving someone take me home, no not you Christina someone else who appreciates me." Tom drove me home after feeling terrible for bringing up the subject. So hear I am diary telling you of the awful things that make up my life when I am not here safe with you, no one loves me the way you do. I hope you never leave me or run out of paper.

Cue to Cue (We found them, we found the CUES!!!)

Edith has arrived and the collective of Emily, Tony and Edith have decided that this show should be performed in as a Japanese movie with English dubbed over, meaning random actors would be on stage to the mouthing and physically acting out other peoples parts while the real people were backstage saying the lines for real. Brilliant! we say how could such a wild idea backfire, the audience won't suspect a thing. The others should be arriving soon, but until then we are have a time and a half with the new sounds and things. What is the music you say, why it is Harry Potter meets Clue (no more no less). Let that marinate for a few days until the moment, yes the moment you've all been waiting for at 8pm on Thursday of October the 14th when the comically mystery is solved. Die Mommie Die is almost upon us, will she live... or won't she?....(dun dun dun).

Cue to Cue (but we have forgotten the cues)

I am currently on stage anxiously awaiting my first direction. I have been envious of Margo for getting to play Edie and now I get to stand in for her until her arrival. Apparently the majority of the cast of DMD has forgotten how to tell time seeing is that there is no other cast members here besides myself (Tony Parker) and we are already over an hour late getting started. This fact should put the future audience at ease knowing that we have spent more time on acting and working moments than learning to tell time. I have just discovered Jerid stabbing the couch with a giant needle and he is liking it a little too much (I wonder if there is subtext somewhere in there, maybe he is thinking of someone?). I feel like breaking into song, what song you ask, that is a good question when I know you'll know. The anticipation of this first cue is crazy I wonder what it will be and what I will have to do. OMG! the first cue is here, it finally here...I go I go look how I go swifter than the arrow from the Tartar's bow.

DRY TECH!

Hello, out there in the interweb!

It's Saturday morning/afternoonish, and we are eagerly awaiting Ami's arrival at the theatre. Earlier this morning, I met Joel and Jerid to help them carry in some new props for our show! We had a little excitement, because I may have accidentally set off the fire alarm (just button pushing, no actual fire!) but then it was straight down to business. The crowning moment of this morning was when Joel and I tried to carry the bar up the stairs ourselves. Not as successful as you might think, but VERY entertaining.

So, as we speak, Jerid is working away on stage, and I believe Ami just arrived! With tacos! Let the fun begin!

A Night cap after a night of designing

Dear Diary,

Today consisted of
  • getting up way to early after a ate night of Grease 2 and leg shaving,
  • Gathering some more online research while
  • Rendering a side project I've been editing for a friend,
  • Then rolling into some clothes and heading to coffee before
  • Stopping for crew snacks then
  • Checking in to The Falk Theater (I'll never be mayor of that place, it's so unfair)
  • Catching up with KC, our fearless SM
  • Checking in with Alex and Sam on the technical end of things before we
  • Started our Queue to Queue for Die! Mommie! Die!, during which I
  • Stopped outside the front of the theater for a literal Drive-by by my Friend for whom I am editing. At 4:40 I
  • Headed over to Patel to teach my acting for Middle School class then
  • Headed straight to Gorilla to Bar Tend for Shipwrecked, during which I
  • Started burning the large stack of DVDs for said editing project
  • Then Headed home after closing out and
  • Have spent the past 3 hours researching Photo shop candidates on the internet and narrowing down my themes and stings for the final sound design choices.
  • All while swapping out a burned DVD for a blank one every twelve minutes.
  • And now I am enjoying a vodka and sweet tea (Thanks, Mitzi for introducing me to it, it to me.)
Life is pretty good from my perspective.

Angela Update!

Hello Dah-lings!

I hope you are giddy with school-girlish excitement to see 'Die! Mommie! Die!' next weekend! We are all working very hard to bring you a retina burning, highly theatrical, acid trip experience! My evolution into Angela is progressing nicely, the costumes are FAB, my "lady parts" are fully formed, and last night, with the help and immense support of the cast and crew (all crammed into KC's tiny tiny bathroom) my legs are now smooth like honey.
On the acting front I have been working on thinking on the line and keeping every moment fresh. Pacing is so very important in a comedy and if the "ball is dropped" it is very difficult to pick it up again. By recommendation of Ami, before our run yesterday, I walked through every physical moment of the play, while listening to my Angela Arden Mix to be sure to block out any distractions. This exercise really helped free me during the run because after walking through every technical moment, every look, grand entrance, cringe, strut, and so on, came naturally whilst I could enjoy sharing the stage with such an obnoxiously talented scoobie-doo gang!

And now for my conclusion! KC and I are plotting to kidnap all of our fellow Die! Mommie! Die!-ers because, well, who wouldn't want to kidnap us, we're as fun as a discotheque in Barcelona. This isn't the last you will hear of Angela Arden, stay tuned for more!

Q2Q

Last night we had a cast/crew girls night (with guys included). We watched Grease 2, which has to be one of the top 10 worst musical movies ever. After cookies, popsicles, chocolate, and drinks we decided it was time for the main event of the night to begin. Zach and I secured a bond between Angela and Eddie that had since not existed. I shaved his legs, to about 2 inches above the knee. That is a certain level of trust in itself. Not only did this happen in a small bathroom, but the cast, crew, and director were present. Afterwards we marveled at the smoothness and pasty complexion of Zach's now hairless legs. Around 5:30, after our naked pillow fight (Just joshing ya! That was for all of those of you who have unrealistic ideas of what actually happens at slumber parties.), we proceed to pull KC's mattress into the living room next to the futon so that we could all share in our 3 hours of sleep before waking up to head to the theatre once again. And so here I sit, on the lavish white couch center stage, under bright lights, freezing my butt off, as we set lighting cues. Ahh the glamour of the theatre!

The Legs!!!!

So, currently I am taking an intermission after a "Girls night out" at KC's with Lyndsay, Griff, Margo, Nick, KC, Emily Zach and Mariana. So far tonight has consisted of Grease 2 and shaving Zach's Legs, more specifically - Margo shaving Zach's Legs. Emily will be posting pics soon, I hope.

Last night, I think our run went very well, considering it was our first run of the entire show. During the run, I really wanted to keep my character strong through the entire performance, so I tried to keep my energy up whenever I was not on stage, and try to stay as much "in the moment" as I could when on stage. Overall, I think we all did a pretty good job. There are definitely some areas that need to be tweaked here and there for tonight. I have some lines to work on as far as remembering how they go exactly. That might be a bit important during the show, saying the right lines. Last night after rehearsal, I ran back in my head some of the parts I had line trouble with. Today, I have been thinking a lot about my character, and how to apply his different traits throughout the play, and also how that would affect his lines as well as his relationships with the other characters. I am thoroughly ecstatic about the show. I am looking forward to more progress at another great run tonight!!!

Tim Bourn
To prepare for rehearsal tonight I went and got coffee with Griff and we went through each others scenes and talked about what was the part in the line before that moved our characters to talk. I thought last nights run was great! I mean obviously we still need to keep working but for the first run through with set and props I thought everyone handled it really well. My biggest challenge is that darn southern accent. I mumble sometimes in real life and then adding on a strong southern accent is hard. Sometimes the words just get lost in my mouth so I'm going to really focus on that tonight. I love everyone in this department and I'm going to be sad to leave it! My favorite moment of last night was...well there were a lot...but I would say when Zach and I were backstage waiting to come on for our entrance with the golf clubs. We were trying to climb up the blocks, with heels, not hit our heads on the ladder and lift these really heavy golf clubs. It was funny. But on-stage...when Lance took Bootsie's flask.

Blue Fox Arts and Entertainment

Just wanted to take a second to pimp out our props and set dressing design team, Blue Fox. Joel Gennari and Jerid Fox make up this phenomenal team. Currently you can see their work on stage at Gorilla for Shipwrecked, at American Stage for The Mystery of Irma Vep and starting next week here at the Falk for Die! Mommie! Die!.

Everything they do has so much detail and craft involved. Please do youself a favor and hire these guys or, at the very least, go see a show JUST BECAUSE YOU KNOW THEY ARE INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN. Seriously, seeing one of their designs is like seeing them on stage.

Enjoy their website:
http://www.bluefoxarts.com/

The following pics are of Joel's work, either by hand or on the computer. (Photos taken by Kyle Cohenour).

Below is a peek at our the portrait hanging on the set of our lovely leading lady.

And here is the album cover from Angela Arden's "Her Christmas Album"

Today is a prep day for the rehearsal that is about to come. We had our first run through. We did a stumble through about a week ago, once we had all the blocking down. We've spent this week putting the funny back into the script, having taken the first two weeks to build real relationships and situations. I re-read the script last night before bed and dreamt of the play all night. Now I am combing over thoughts and turning that into deliverables that we can work towards at rehearsal tonight. We'll tag team rehearse between the stage, the lobby and the hallway on the second floor. Any moment we have to spare tonight will be filled with either direction on stage direction with Mariana in the lobby or line bashing with Emily.

Cheers to a rockin' cast a crew and get ready to take the plunge tonight.

Meanwhile, Zachary Hines

Man, if you could on;y tag along on this ride with us. Here are a few shots from the video and photography shoot on Friday. Special thanks to Frank Chavez & Bobby Ann Loper. Kasey, Mariana, Zach and I ventured off into the great unknown we like to call model time.

Side note: Don't let the fact that Zach is the only one photographed lead you astray. There are 5 other key players on the stage with Zach. It is more that Angela Arden's reputation is too big for a photo. No one else would fit in it. On the actor side of things, this is truly an ensemble piece. Everyone needs to be spot on. And they are. Kudos to the phenomenal gang that hangs with me every night at the Falk.

Here are a few of the shots from photo shoot day.

From Angela Arden's "Her Christmas Album"

Sometime, long after the rehearsal has ended and I am somewhere far removed from The Falk (of which Zach is Mayor, btw), I laugh for no particular reason and for no one in particular. Just remembering that tonight was a funny rehearsal. I remember that I laughed a lot tonight and that makes me laugh late at night tonight. For no particular reason and for no one in particular.

Too Meta for you?

How 'bout this: Today at rehearsal was funny fun times.

Your Mother.

Reporting from inside Ami's left calf...

Last month was September. You know what that means, don't you?

I'm here for a visit. The name's Bendy Straw Calf. For those of you unfamiliar with my presence in Ami's life, I basically make it a terrible experience for her to walk around. Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Bendy, why must you cause Ami so much pain?" Here's why. Once, many Septembers ago, Ami welcomed me into her life during a "Frankie and Johnny" rehearsal. It was such a joyous experience for the both of us, I decided to return every September so we can both relive those fond memories. Sick and twisted? Maybe. Endearing, tender, and adorable? Definitely.

Unfortunately, not everyone is happy about my little vacation to paradise. I have to share Ami with her leg muscles, and boy, are they pissed. They are ALWAYS whining and crying out, "Just so you know, it sucks in here!" They've even been creating some pretty gnarley bruises on Ami's leg. It's been a whole year since they've seen me, and I don't even get a "Welcome Back, Bendy!" sign. Selfish.

Ah, well. My stay here is coming to an end pretty soon. It's been another lovely visit, as usual, and I cannot wait to return to Ami next September. In the meantime, I'll be around enjoying some "Die Mommie Die!" rehearsals.

Sincerely Ami's,
Always in September,

Bendy Straw Calf <3

Best A.D. Ever

Hi everyone! I'm Miles, I'm really nice and pretty charming too. This show is so much fun, even though the rehearsals go late, and I get really tired. It is going to be so worth it, and everyone should come.

And Now for Something Completely Different...

I just sent out a bunch of serious, business-y stage management emails, and I thought I'd get a little wacky with a blog post, now that Ami gave us free rein and all.

I was reading our first post about the cast and crew, and realized that we were missing one very essential part of our team.

AMI!

Working with Ami has been so much fun. She's an extremely talented director, as I'm sure all of you readers know (and if you don't, you should!), and it very obvious that she loves what she does! I wish you all could see her in rehearsals. Sometimes, she gets so excited that she will dance in the orchestra pit and jump around during the scene. Her energy is contagious, and we are always so hyped up to be in rehearsal with her.
Basically, she's kind of a big deal and we love her a lot.

Alright, cyber-civilians... Now that our cast & crew descriptions are complete, it's bed time for this sleepy stage-manager.
-KC
Danielle, Meagan and Mike stopped by rehearsal briefly, to talk about the posters for the show this evening (09/29), Walking into a theatre, and seeing boobs that rival Danielle's(which is extremely difficult) was hysterical. The show is coming along quite nicely, and Zack's heel-skills are more fierce than a tranny at a gay pride parade in San Francisco! Can't wait to see the end product
Greetings, Blog World!
I just snagged the blog seat to say a quick hello before rehearsal whisks me away to Stage-Management Land. You soon-to-be-audience members are in for a treat! This cast is quirky, intelligent, and boat loads of fun! The show is coming together rather nicely, and I'm so happy to be a part of it! Ami is starting to call for actors, so that's my cue! Adios, amigos!
Until next time,
KC
Pouring rain on the way to rehearsal!!! Tonight is going to be a wet one...

For the next month the cast of Die! Mommie! Die! at the University of Tampa will be taking "Silly Ami" over and blogging about their experiences at rehearsals and all the amazing times we have together, under Ami's direction. There will be quotes, pictures and anything else we can think of. But, now to start with the band of characters...

KC Shaffer (Stage Manager/Ring Leader) leads the backstage crew with her incredible stage managing skills. She is organized, tough, always prepared and very firm, but always in the best mood and incredible to work with!

Emily Thaler(A.K.A. myself) is KC's right hand woman and is loving this experience and hanging out with the cast every night! Not much else to say! :)

Mariana Rocha (Assistant Director) is copiously taking notes on how the heck one directs a show, when she is not working for our production manager or taking over the action on the stage in Ami's place. And we have discovered that we had to create a goofy pic of her, as her fb is only full of stunning pics of Mariana.

Zachary Hines (Ms. Arden) plays our Die! Mommie! Die! leading lady - Angela Arden! It's been an absolute pleasure to watch him in heals every rehearsal and now also with boobs! Zack warms up our hearts every night with his laugh, sweetness and extravagant personality :)

Margo Stewart (Edith) is gracefully known as the know-it-all. From The bible to the Horse races, she's been on top of on-site dramaturgy (from inside her head!). Oh, and she's fun to have around, too.

Nick Haugland is our charming, seductive, macho man, "Don Juan" - Tony Parker! He always brings a lot of energy and, well.. testosterone to the table! Nick's humor and positive view on life uplifts everyone and everything around him (including Lance's... hmmm... spirit) ;)

Timothy Bourn (Sol P. Sussman) the youngest in our group plays the oldest in the cast - Old, jaded, constipate Sol P. Sussman. Here he is sporting one of Sols cardigans, direct from Timothy's private collection.

Griffeth Whitehurst (Lance) Seems to be latching on to the concept of dressing in women's clothing and prancing around the stage quite nicely. And he's not even playing our leading lady. Griff, the actor, brings a positive charge to every rehearsal and is almost night the direct catalyst of a severe dose of laughter.

Lyndsay Magid (Bootsie) When she is not texting acting questions during her law classes, Lyndsay is always arriving on set with a smile on her face and a word to mispronounce on her lips. Which one will it be today? Codicils, perhaps?

Miles Parks (AD/Tony Parker US) is one of our team of AD/ASMs. His focus is on keeping Nick in line, which, as we all know, is a full-time job. He was originally cast in the role of Tony Parker but that pesky thing we like to call life got in the way so he is with us 2 nights a week and there in spirit the rest of the week.

Kaitlyn Rosen (Dramaturg) rounds off our shining group. When not submersed in her own rehearsals for Sweet Charity or the Cabaret, she is researching for us and presenting us with her fabulous findings.
